Al termine del corso, gli studenti dovranno aver acquisito familiarità con gli elementi di base della teoria della comunicazione e della pragmatica linguistica. Dovranno conoscere gli aspetti teorici dell'analisi del discorso politico e delle metafore concettuali utilizzate nel discorso politico; dovranno essere in grado di analizzare testi politici, in particolare i discorsi dei leader, anche rispetto al fenomeno del populismo. 

Upon completion of the course, students should be familiar with the basic elements of communication theory and linguistic pragmatics. They should be familiar with the theoretical aspects of political discourse analysis and conceptual metaphors used in political discourse; they should be able to analyze political texts, especially leaders' speeches, considering in particular the typical discourse of populism.

Livello lingua base inglese B1+ QCRE. Nozioni di base di linguistica.

Political Linguistics: The Voice of the Leaders. Obiettivo del corso del primo anno di Linguistica inglese sarà sviluppare le competenze linguistiche, teoriche e metodologiche dello studente rispetto al genere testuale del discorso politico, seguendo le modalità retorico performative del leader e le dinamiche della comunicazione politica. Il corso approfondirà aspetti legati alla political metaphor analysis   e all’approccio linguistico della critical discourse analysis, alla comunicazione politica e allo spin-doctoring. Dall’esame di alcune questioni teoriche si passerà all’analisi di una selezione mirata di testi scelti che consentano di giungere a una pratica di lettura colta e competente, e a una padronanza linguistica “ intermediate”.

Political Linguistics: The Voice of the Leaders. The course will provide a grounding in the main aspects of pragmatics and political linguistics, and will familiarise  students with rhetorical, textual and linguistic analysis of those features  to be found in political speeches. It will also examine how language is used by contemporary politicians and how it is part of the wider process of political discourse and political communication. The course will explore aspects of political metaphor analysis and the linguistic approach of critical discourse analysis, political communication and spin-doctoring. From the examination of a number of theoretical issues, we will then move on to the analysis of a targeted selection of chosen texts that will allow us to reach a competent reading practice, and an "intermediate" linguistic level.

Le valutazioni saranno in itinere, a metà e alla fine del corso con l'ausilio di strumenti informatici e piattaforme di valutazione. Saranno richiesti lavori individuali su base volontaria. L'esame finale sarà una prova scritta, in inglese, con domande a risposta aperta e analisi di testi.

In itinere assessments,  mid-term and end-of-course with the help of IT tools and specific assessment platforms. Individual work will be required on a voluntary basis.The final examination will be a written test in English with open-ended questions and text analysis.

Alla fine del corso, lo studente conoscerà gli approcci metodologici allo studio della linguistica storica e della storia della lingua inglese. Avrà familiarizzato con i principali fattori esterni e interni di variazione linguistica nel periodo convenzionalmente definito Early Modern English. Sarà in grado di contribuire alle questioni presentate dal docente, sia attraverso interventi in aula, sia con presentazioni individuali e di gruppo. Dovrà saper gestire tutte le precedenti attività in lingua inglese.

By the end of the course, the student will be familiar with methodological approaches to the study of historical linguistics and English language history. He/she will know the main external and internal factors of linguistic variation in the period conventionally referred to as Early Modern English. He/she will be able to contribute to the issues presented by the lecturer, through in-class interventions or individual and group presentations. Will need to be able to handle all previous activities in English.

Programma

Il corso intende presentare allo studente di Magistrale lo studio dei testi del passato secondo la prospettiva della linguistica storica, coniugando  questioni linguistiche e approcci pragmatici.  Con il Cinquecento si fa iniziare la fase moderna della lingua inglese che viene comunemente suddivisa in due periodi: Early Modern per i secoli XVI e XVII, e Late Modern dal Settecento in poi. Il modulo si concentrerà sulla prima fase, introducendo il periodo Tudor, e i cambiamenti culturali, religiosi e economici che lo definirono; gli effetti dello sviluppo della stampa, la pressione ideologica della Riforma, la traduzione di classici e moderni sono solo alcuni dei fattori che influenzeranno l’inglese di questo periodo. La variazione linguistica in prospettiva diacronica del vernacular inglese verrà esplorata attraverso tre tipologie di testi, traduzioni, manuali di lingua  e dizionari, tutti testi dedicati alla riflessione sulla lingua e alla comunicazione tra lingue diverse. La figura e le opere del linguista, lessicografo e traduttore elisabettiano John Florio offrirà il caso di studio privilegiato.

The study of the history of the English language can help students become aware of major issues in several academic fields, including history, literature, political science, anthropology, communication and, of course, languages and linguistics. The course will provide a general description of linguistic changes, and reasons for changes in the grammar, sounds, and vocabulary of English in XVI century. The module will focus on the Tudor period, and the cultural, religious, and economic changes that defined it: the effects of the development of printing, the ideological pressure of the Reformation, and the translation of classics and moderns are just some of the factors that would influence the English of this period. The linguistic variation in the diachronic perspective of the English vernacular will be explored through three text-types, translations, language manuals and dictionaries, all of which are dedicated to the reflection on language and communication between different languages. The figure and works of the Elizabethan linguist, lexicographer and translator John Florio will provide the privileged case study.

1) The enrichment of vocabulary was one the main goals in the development of the early modern English vernacular. Translations of classical, Italian and French texts, word-formation, borrowings,  semantic change were  some of the most significant strategies.  Describe some of these processes that characterised  the evolution of early modern English.

2) Describe features and changes of second-person pronouns of address in Early Modern English.
